One of the hardest things about link building is simple: people don’t do favors for strangers.
Yet, that’s what most link building strategies expect.
It’s like walking up to a random person, asking for $20, and saying,
“You’d really be helping me out.”
You’ll get a few yeses… but mostly blank stares.
Now imagine asking someone who already knows you.
A friend, partner, or someone who’s already talked about you publicly.
That’s what today’s strategy is all about, getting links from people who already like or trust you.
Let’s go.
Who’s Already Talking About You?
If you’re anything like us SEO nerds, you probably notice backlinks faster than the content around them.
But most people aren’t like us.
A ton of site owners mention your brand, your team, or your products, and never link to your site.
That’s what we call unlinked mentions.
And here’s why they’re gold:
These authors already trust you enough to mention you. That’s half the persuasion done.
All that’s left?
Find the mention → contact the author or editor → politely ask for the link.
It’s one of the highest-converting link-building tactics you can run.
If you’ve been around for a while or done PR, podcasts, partnerships, or content marketing, chances are there are dozens — if not hundreds — of unlinked mentions out there waiting to be turned into links.
If you’re brand new, don’t worry — I’ll show you how to spin this strategy to work for you, too.
How to Find Unlinked Mentions
You guessed it: we’re heading straight to Ahrefs.
Here’s the process:
- Go to Content Explorer.
- Search for your brand name in quotes, excluding your domain.
- Example: “Ranklink” -site:ranklink.com
- Apply filters:
- Language: English
- Live pages only
- Domain Rating: 25+
- Highlight unlinked domains for ranklink.com
Now you’ve got a filtered list of every live page that mentions your brand but doesn’t link to your site.
Beautiful.
If you’re a bigger brand, this can show hundreds of opportunities in seconds.
Go Beyond Just Your Brand Name
People don’t always say “Ranklink.” Sometimes they mention you differently. Try searching for:
- Brand variations: Ranklink, RankLink, Ranklink.com
- Product or feature names: Ranklink Outreach Tool, Ranklink Inner Circle
- Team members: your CEO, founders, marketers, etc.
- Coined terms: anything you’ve branded (like “Ranklink Boost Method”)
Every one of those might lead to a mention you can reclaim.
No Ahrefs? No Problem (Sort Of)
You can still use Google search:
intext:”Ranklink” -site:ranklink.com
It works, but… it’s messy.
You’ll get thousands of results with no easy way to see which pages are worth your time or already link to you.
That’s why Ahrefs makes this so efficient — it adds context, filters spam, and saves hours.
What Should You Email Them?
I know what you’re thinking — “Can you just give me a template?”
Sorry, friend — no cookie-cutter templates here. That’s how your email ends up in the trash.
This type of outreach is different.
You’re not cold pitching. You’re asking for something that already makes sense.
Here’s the formula:
- Be friendly.
- Be concise.
- Add value.
Something like this:
“Hey [Name],
I noticed you mentioned Ranklink in your recent post about link-building tools — thank you! 🙌
Would you mind adding a link to our homepage or the resource you mentioned? It’d help readers find the full context if they want to check it out.
Appreciate it,
[Your Name]”
That’s literally all it takes.
If you can add extra value, even better.
For example:
- Correct a small factual mistake.
- Offer an updated stat or quote.
- Point out outdated info they could improve.
That makes your email stand out as helpful, not pushy.
Piggyback Off Your Competitors
This one’s sneaky — and powerful.
You can use the exact same strategy to find unlinked mentions of your competitors.
Search for their brand, products, or coined terms just like you did for yours.
Then reach out to those authors with something like:
“Hey, I saw you mentioned [Competitor]. I actually run a similar tool that offers [better feature/benefit]. Would you be open to adding it as an alternative?”
If your product is legitimately better — and you approach politely — you’ll get links.
Bonus: fewer people are doing this compared to traditional backlink stealing, so editors haven’t seen it a thousand times.
Less noise = more conversions.
Track Mentions in Real-Time
Instead of doing massive outreach sprints once a year, start tracking mentions as they happen.
You’ll catch fresh opportunities and dramatically increase your success rate.
Why?
Because:
- Timing matters. Authors care more about articles they just published.
- Recency breeds relevance. When you email someone a week after their post goes live, it feels natural — not transactional.
Here’s how to automate it:
1. Ahrefs Alerts
Set up “Mention Alerts” for:
- Your brand name + variations
- Product names
- Key team members
Ahrefs will email you daily or weekly whenever you’re mentioned anywhere online.
2. Backlink Alerts
Set up alerts for your competitors’ new backlinks too.
That way you can reverse-engineer which campaigns or partnerships are working for them — and jump on those opportunities.
3. Google Alerts (Optional Backup)
Google Alerts is kind of the boomer version of Ahrefs Alerts. It works, but you’ll have to sift through a lot of junk.
Still, it’s free, and sometimes catches things Ahrefs misses.
Bonus Tip: Reverse Image Search
Text mentions are one thing. But stolen images? Even better opportunity.
You can use:
- Google Image Search, or
- TinEye Reverse Image Search
to find every site using your:
- Logo
- Infographics
- Custom illustrations
- Team photos
Then reach out like this:
“Hey [Name],
I noticed you used our [image/infographic] in your article, really appreciate that!
Would you mind adding a quick credit link back to the original source on our site?
Thanks so much,
[Your Name] – Ranklink”
Friendly. Simple. Highly effective.
